Retirement Income Planning in Sunnyvale

We help you turn your savings into a steady monthly income. The work begins with the policies, annuities and accounts you already have. Anything still pulling its weight stays put. Anything falling short gets a plain explanation, with a better option laid next to it.

Start with what you already own

Retirement income planning means deciding where your monthly money comes from once the paychecks stop. For most clients that is some mix of Social Security, a 401(k) or IRA, maybe a pension, and often a life insurance policy with cash value they half forgot about.

We look at every piece before we suggest anything new. An old whole life policy can sometimes be changed to a smaller paid-up policy with no more premiums, or its cash value can help fund income. An older annuity may carry better terms than anything sold today. Swapping a policy can restart surrender charges and cost you real money, so we only recommend it when the numbers clearly say so, and we show you those numbers.

Living costs in Sunnyvale and across the South Bay run high. We size your income to what you actually spend, not to a rule of thumb.

What the work covers

A list of everything you own

We gather your policies, annuity contracts, retirement account statements and any pension paperwork. Most people have never seen all of it on one page.

Your income gap

We compare your expected monthly spending with the income you can count on. The difference is the gap your savings has to fill.

Keep, adjust or replace, policy by policy

Each policy gets a straight answer. Keep it as is, change it, or replace it, with the reason written next to it.

Guaranteed income options

We explain how an income annuity works, what it gives up in flexibility, and when it makes sense to cover only your basic bills with one. You decide how much, if any, to guarantee.

Spouse and beneficiary check

We look at what income continues if one of you dies first. We also check that every beneficiary line on every policy and contract still names the right person.

When a retirement income plan makes sense

  • Your last paycheck is a few years away

The stretch just before you stop working is when choices cost the least. Leave it to the final month and many doors have already closed.

  • There's a policy in a drawer you can't explain

You may have bought whole life or universal life decades ago and filed it away. Its value today could surprise you in either direction.

  • Someone is pushing a policy swap

Pressure to cash in an old policy or annuity and buy a new one is worth a second opinion. Now and then the trade is sound. Plenty of times the main winner is the seller.

  • You have a balance but no paycheck plan

Money in an account doesn't pay the bills by itself. Without a set amount coming out each month, it's easy to draw it down too fast or sit on it out of worry.

  • A pension ends if one spouse dies

If your pension stops or shrinks at the first death, the surviving spouse can come up short. Life coverage or a survivor option can close that gap.

How we work through it with you

  1. 1

    A first phone call

You tell us where things stand and when you want to stop working. We tell you which papers to pull together. No product talk yet.

  2. 2

    We go over your documents

We sit down with you in person or go through it by phone. We read the policy pages and contract terms, not just the summary sheets.

  3. 3

    You get our recommendation

We walk you through each item: what it's worth today, what it can pay you, and whether to keep, adjust or replace it. If nothing needs to change, we tell you that.

  4. 4

We set up only what you approve

If you choose a new policy or annuity, we handle the paperwork and explain each form before you sign. We suggest a short review each year or after a big life change.

What affects the cost

Talking through your situation and getting a quote costs you nothing. The cost that matters comes from the products you choose, if you choose any. These are the things that move it most.

Your age when income starts
The later income begins, the more each dollar you put in can pay out per month. Starting early means smaller payments for longer.
How much you want guaranteed
Covering only basic bills with guaranteed income takes less money than covering everything. Most clients land somewhere in between.
Surrender charges on what you own
Pulling money out of an older annuity or policy too soon can trigger a charge. We check the schedule before suggesting any move.
Riders and extra features
Options like inflation increases or income for a surviving spouse add cost. We explain what each one buys you so you can skip the ones you don't need.
Your health, if life coverage is part of it
If the plan includes new term life or whole life coverage, your age and health set the premium. Keeping an existing policy often avoids a new medical exam.

Retirement income questions we hear

Something not covered here? (408) 827-9678

Should I cash out my old whole life policy?

Not without a look first. Cashing out may trigger taxes and ends the coverage for your beneficiary. Sometimes a paid-up policy or a loan against cash value works better. We run the numbers on each option side by side.

Do I have to buy an annuity?

No. An annuity is one tool for guaranteed income, and it isn't right for everyone. If your Social Security and pension already cover your basic bills, you may not need one at all.

Are you going to tell me to replace everything?

No. Our starting point is the coverage you already have. Replacing a policy costs money and can restart waiting periods, so we only suggest it when the new one clearly does better for you, and we show why in writing.

What happens to the plan if I die first?

That's one of the first things we check. We look at survivor pension options, joint annuity payouts and life coverage, so your spouse keeps enough income to cover the bills.

Will you handle my brokerage or 401(k) investments?

That's outside what we do. Our work is with insurance products like life policies and annuities. We still read your 401(k) and IRA statements so we know how they feed your monthly income. If you need someone to pick and manage investments, we'll say so straight.

Find out what your current policies can do

Gather your statements and give us a call. We'll walk through each policy and account with you and give an honest answer on which ones stay as they are, which need a change, and whether anything should go.
