Universal Life Insurance in Sunnyvale
This is permanent coverage where you can raise or lower the premium as your income shifts. If you already own a policy, we read your latest statement first and test whether it can stay on track. A new policy only comes up when keeping the old one no longer adds up.
What Universal Life Is and When It Fits
Universal life is permanent coverage with a flexible premium. Part of each payment covers the cost of insurance. The rest sits in a cash value account that earns interest. In a strong year you can pay more than the target amount. In a lean year you can pay less, as long as the cash value still covers the monthly charges.
That flexibility is the strength and the risk. The cost of insurance rises as you age. If the cash value runs dry, the policy can lapse. Many policies sold years ago assumed interest rates that never held up, so they are underfunded today.
It fits people who want coverage for life but need more room than whole life allows. If you only need coverage while kids are young or a loan is open, term life insurance is usually the cheaper answer, and we will say so.
What Our Universal Life Work Covers
- In-force illustration review
- We help you request a current illustration from your carrier. It shows how long the policy lasts at today's premium and today's rates. That one document tells us most of what we need.
- Fix-first options
- Often an older policy can be kept. Raising the premium, lowering the face amount or trimming a rider can stretch coverage for years. We lay out each option and what it costs you.
- Honest replace answer
- Sometimes a new policy is the better deal, especially if your health is good. We compare the two side by side, including surrender charges and a new contestability period.
- New policy design
- For new coverage, we set the face amount, the premium and how long the guarantee runs. A guaranteed universal life design keeps you covered to a chosen age and builds very little cash value. A cash value design grows more but needs closer watching.
- Beneficiary check
- We confirm each beneficiary is named correctly and still the person you intend. A missed update after a divorce or a death is one of the most common problems we see.
Signs Your Universal Life Policy Needs a Look
Cash value keeps shrinking
Your annual statement shows a lower cash value each year even though you pay on time. The monthly charges are outrunning what goes in.
A lapse warning letter arrived
Carriers send these when the policy is close to running out. You usually have a short grace period, so do not set it aside.
Your premium was set decades ago
Policies bought when rates were high were often funded at a level that only worked if those rates lasted. Most did not.
Your needs changed
The kids are grown, the business sold, or a spouse passed. The face amount you bought may be more or less than you need now.
You want permanent coverage at a lower cost
Whole life costs more because everything is guaranteed. Universal life can cover you for life for less, if it is set up and funded right.
What Sets Your Universal Life Premium
There is no flat rate for this kind of coverage. Your premium comes from your age and health and from how the policy is built. Once we know your situation we quote real numbers and explain each line.
Age and health
These drive the cost of insurance more than anything. A health class one step better can lower the premium a good deal.
Face amount
More coverage means higher monthly charges inside the policy.
Guarantee length
A policy guaranteed to age 100 costs more than one guaranteed to 90. Choose the age that matches your plan.
Funding level
Paying above the minimum builds cash value and cushions against rising charges. Paying the minimum keeps cost down now but raises lapse risk later.
Tobacco and riders
Tobacco use raises rates. Riders such as a waiver of premium or long-term care add cost.
How We Work Through It With You
- 1
A phone call first
We ask what you have, what you want covered and for how long. No paperwork yet.
- 2
Gather the documents
For an existing policy, we need your latest annual statement and an in-force illustration. We tell you exactly what to ask the carrier for.
- 3
Lay out the choices
We show you the options in writing: keep as is, adjust, or replace. Each one shows the premium, how long coverage lasts and what you give up.
- 4
Apply or adjust
If you keep the policy, we help with the carrier forms. If you switch, we walk you through the application and the medical exam if one is required. The old policy stays active until the new one is approved.

Universal Life Questions We Hear Often
How is this different from a whole life policy?
With a whole life policy, the premium is locked in and the cash value grows on a guaranteed schedule. Universal life lets you change what you pay and sometimes the face amount too. That gives you more room to adjust, but you carry more of the risk if the policy is underfunded.
My old policy is about to lapse. Is it too late?
Often it is not. Paying more, lowering the face amount or using available cash value can keep it alive. Act during the grace period, because once a policy lapses, getting it back usually means new health questions.
Should I replace my universal life policy?
Only if the numbers favor it. Replacing can make sense when you are healthy and the old policy is badly underfunded. It can hurt if you have health changes, surrender charges or would restart the two-year contestability period.
Can I borrow from the cash value?
Yes, most policies allow loans or withdrawals. Unpaid loans reduce what your beneficiary receives and can speed up a lapse. We show you the effect before you take one.
Can universal life help with retirement?
Some people use cash value as one part of retirement income. It should not be the whole plan. Our retirement income planning work looks at it alongside your other savings.
